Warisan leader slams GRS' recycled Sabah CM term limit promise

A Warisan representative today slammed Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy secretary-general Armizan Ali for supposedly recycling an old promise to Sabahans.

This followed a press conference by the Papar MP yesterday, where he called on the rakyat to support GRS in the upcoming Sabah state election so they could limit the chief minister post to two consecutive terms.

In a statement, Sri Tanjong assemblyperson Justin Wong regarded the speech as GRS playing slogans and toying with the rakyat’s well-being for their political gains.

“This suggestion to limit the Sabah chief minister post to two terms is nothing new. It had been proposed by Pakatan Harapan back in 2021 through a memorandum of understanding with Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

“However, during the five years of their administration, where they have the support of two-thirds of the state legislative assembly, we did not see them taking any action towards keeping this promise.

“Now, when the state election is nearing, they suddenly repeated the promise as if it were something new.

“Isn’t this a form of deception to the rakyat?” Wong (above) asked.

‘Bigger win’

According to news reports, Armizan told the media after an event in Papar yesterday that limiting the chief minister’s term is among the promises that GRS has outlined in its manifesto for the next state election.

“Thus, GRS needs a bigger win with more than two-thirds majority in the upcoming state election,” he said, as quoted by Berita Harian.

Wong also questioned the GRS-led state government’s performance.

“If they had adopted good policies, surely we would have felt an improvement in our quality of life.

“But what happens today is the opposite - we are facing regular interruption of electricity and water supplies, poor road conditions, weak communications systems, and basic infrastructures that are at disappointing levels,” he said.
