MCMC has clarified that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is only being investigated as witness, not as a suspect, in an ongoing probe implicating him in a statement related to RON95 subsidies.

“The investigation involves the contents of a TikTok account linking him to an allegation about targeted RON95 subsidies.

“The focus of the investigation to verify the context of the content that was published, and does not involve any allegations or accusation against him,” it said in a statement today.

The commission said it has contacted the Pagoh MP today to summon him for questioning as a witness.

The MCMC also urged all parties to not to speculate and to allow the investigation to proceed.

Letter received

Earlier today, Muhyiddin announced that he had received a letter from the internet regulator, summoning him to give a statement.

“The MCMC says they want to record my statement as a witness. I want to ask – has MCMC investigated the prime minister?

“I think this is an abuse of power. This is a personal issue raised by the prime minister against me, but he’s directing MCMC to investigate it. That doesn’t seem right,” he said.

“I’ve already issued my statement. If MCMC calls me in, I’ll just repeat what I’ve said publicly," he stressed.

During the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Aug 5, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed that Muhyiddin had questioned the government’s decision not to provide petrol subsidies to foreigners.

Muhyiddin countered that he never made such a statement and accused Anwar of failing to verify the claim properly.

Anwar then told MCMC to investigate whether Muhyiddin had made the statement.
