V Thirunama Karasu today lodged a police report claiming that his elder brother, senior lawyer VK Lingam, had interfered with Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) investigations in 1998.

In his report, Thirunama detailed how family members and Lingam's associates had allegedly pressured him into seeing several psychiatric doctors and eventually be warded in two hospitals that year.

Thirunama claimed that the stints with the psychiatric doctors were an elaborate ruse to nullify his statements to the ACA in 1998 which implicated Lingam.

He filed the report with the Brickfields district police headquarters this morning. He was accompanied by lawyer Wee Choo Keong.

The content of his report was similar to what Thirunama had told Malaysiakini during an interview last week.

Other than numerous lawyers from prominent legal firms, Thirunama also named a prominent psychiatric doctor in the report, claiming that the doctor had wrote a fictitious medical report.

"When I saw him (the doctor), he told me that Lingam had already called him about my visit... he also asked me to put up an act to help Lingam," he stated in his report.

Former AG implicated

In March this year, Thirunama lodged a police report alleging judicial corruption by Lingam between 1995 and 1996. This was made public by Wee last week.

Following this, Lingam claimed that he was cleared in the 1998 probe, explaining that the Attorney-General (AG) did not pursue the matter because Thirunama's 'mental condition' was backed by psychiatric records .

Responding to this, Wee said Lingam's claim of being cleared could not be taken seriously because the AG at the time was Mokhtar Abdullah, who was also implicated in Thirunama's statement to the ACA in 1998.

"I cannot believe that the AG could give instructions at that time to close the case, or otherwise. He was not a fit and proper person to get involved in the decision making against Lingam in 1998," he said.

"Whatever decision made by Mokhtar at that time is null and void," said Wee, adding that an independent body should have decided on the case.

Mokhtar served as AG between 1994 to 2001. He went on to become a Federal Court judge in 2001 until his death in 2003.

Wee said current AG Abdul Gani Patail should review the 1998 case.
