Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli said the people’s reliance on personality and sentiments when selecting leaders has resulted in the country having ineffective leadership.

The PKR MP said this comes despite political leaders - be it the prime minister or other ministers - being paid by the rakyat to administer the country and resolve issues.

“We tend to select potential leaders using sentiments and personality, not their capabilities or knowledge in administration or solving problems.

“That’s what ails our society…we have many prime ministerial candidates but lack a formula for solving problems.

“And this cycle continues, with problems left unresolved. In the end, even the unpaid sycophants of the leaders get affected,” he said on Facebook today.

While he did not mention anyone in particular, Rafizi touched on issues plaguing various political parties, including his own.

Among others, the Pandan lawmaker mentioned the alleged attempt by certain factions within Bersatu to oust its president, Muhyiddin Yassin.

As for his own party, the former PKR deputy president said that while the party polls are over, many members are still hurting over it, claiming it was obvious even among voters.

Slander, cyberbullying

In his post, Rafizi also chided party supporters who constantly criticise their foes using unsavoury remarks and insults, reminding them that they are carrying the sin of slander.

He said that the insults they hurl on social media often turn into cyberbullying.

“And our younger generation watches their actions as these sycophants are also parents.

“So, even after a new leader arises, the problem doesn’t stop. The insults continue and the cycle persists,” he added.
