Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad was arrested in the wee hours of the morning today.

Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar claimed the arrest was over Zaharudin's defence of Kampung Sungai Baru residents resisting eviction, but it is not clear what exactly he said or did that led to the arrest at 1.30am.

Sukri said the arrest of Zaharudin (above), who is also PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's son-in-law, was politically motivated, cruel, and inhumane.

"Arresting a preacher in the middle of the night is an unacceptable form of intimidation," he said.

Malaysiakini is contacting the police for more information regarding the arrest.

Zaharudin has been critical of the government over the forced eviction of 15 households in Kampung Sungai Baru to make way for redevelopment.

Last Thursday - when the eviction was being carried out - he had posted a video saying the land acquisition was no different than what is happening in Gaza.

Prior to that, on Sept 4, Zaharudin claimed that many of his TikTok videos had been removed, simply for defending Kampung Sungai Baru.

Talks between a developer and Kampung Sungai Baru residents about a redevelopment began in 2016, with the government later playing a role in negotiating a payout.

The takeover under the Land Acquisition Act was gazetted in June 2021, when Perikatan Nasional was in power.
