The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry has expressed regret following Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s reprimand over an industry dinner attended by minister Tiong King Sing, which served alcohol.

In a statement today, the ministry said it accepted the prime minister’s comments with full responsibility and humility, expressing regret for any "confusion or misunderstanding" that may have caused public discomfort.

“The ministry takes this as a lesson and will ensure that similar incidents do not recur. The ministry will also make sure that all future programmes under its supervision comply with the established guidelines and ethical standards,” it said.

Earlier today, Anwar reiterated the government's policy that alcohol can't be served at official government events.

Tiong, who faced criticism from both sides of the political divide, had repeatedly insisted the Global Travel Meet gala dinner was taken over by industry players, backed by a joint statement from three tourism associations.

Contrary to Tiong's reported clarifications, Anwar today revealed the latter had explained alcohol was only served after the official event was over.

"I have given a stern reminder to the minister and ministry not to repeat this mistake. Despite the explanation that the (official) event was over, it was not justifiable," he told reporters at Istana Negara today, according to a video published by Bernama.

The ministry also conveyed its appreciation to Anwar for his advice, constructive feedback, and continued support towards efforts to strengthen the country’s tourism, arts, and cultural sectors.

“The ministry deeply regrets any inconvenience caused. The ministry will continue to strengthen communication and ensure continuous improvement in fulfilling its responsibilities to the people and the nation,” it added.

Tiong had refused to comment further on the event when met by reporters at an event in Sunway today.
