Scammers switch QR code for donations in stabbing victim's obituary

Unscrupulous individuals are reportedly taking advantage of those paying their respects to the 16-year-old who was killed in school on Tuesday by switching the QR code for donations.

An obituary with the switched QR codes diverting contributions to scammers’ bank accounts was shared on social media, China Press reported.

The report stated that the original QR code to a Touch N Go eWallet account, belonging to the victim’s mother, was no longer able to accept funds as it had already exceeded its transaction limit.

On Oct 14, a 14-year-old student allegedly fatally stabbed a 16-year-old student at a school in Bandar Utama, Selangor, with reports stating that unrequited love was among the angles being investigated.

However, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar has since confirmed that the suspect in the case did not express his romantic feelings toward the victim.

The suspect has been remanded until Oct 21 to facilitate investigations.

In the latest development, Shazeli reportedly said police are probing the possibility that online video games may have played a part in the suspect’s decision to carry out the attack.

Investigators are also identifying which specific social media platform had the most significant influence on the suspect, he was reported as saying by NST today.
