Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar urged the authorities to investigate Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin on the whereabouts of his son-in-law Adlan Berhan, who is wanted for a financial scandal investigation.

He said it was impossible for Muhyiddin to be oblivious of Adlan’s whereabouts, given he was a former prime minister who shares family ties with the fugitive businessperson.

“I urge the authorities to investigate this and if Muhyiddin is found to be obstructing the probe or withholding information, we should throw the book at him too.

“It’s time for the people to see that no one is above the law, including former prime ministers,” Mahfuz (above) said in a statement today.

On Oct 23, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki claimed that Adlan is living in luxury despite being on the run.

Azam added that Adlan has been traveling from unspecified Middle Eastern countries to go on holidays, including to Thailand, where he reportedly played golf and went to a shooting range.

Previously, Azam said Adlan was residing in a Middle Eastern country with which Malaysia does not have an extradition treaty.

Adlan and his lawyer, Mansoor Saat, are wanted by the authorities for alleged criminal breach charges related to the National Enforcement and Registration (Biometrics) System (NERS), which was financed through a RM595 million sukuk facility.

‘Hypocritical leader’

On that note, Mahfuz said that MACC’s action in requesting the Home Ministry to cancel Adlan’s passport proves the investigation into the major financial scandal is becoming serious, with Interpol being roped in to find Adlan.

“Even more upsetting is the attitude of our former prime minister, who has kept silent and seems to have failed to fully cooperate with the authorities in tracking down his son-in-law,” he added.

Hurling brickbats at Muhyiddin, Mahfuz said the people are getting tired of leaders claiming to champion integrity and Islam but only to keep mum when their own family members get implicated in a crime.

“This is the real face of a hypocritical politician who preaches about morals but remains mum over the misdeeds of their own people,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah urged Muhyiddin to clear the air on Adlan’s issue.

The former minister said he had pressed Muhyiddin on Adlan several times but received no answers.

“If the father-in-law remains silent on the matter, how are we supposed to respond?” Free Malaysia Today reported Saifuddin as saying.
