Cops nab Kg Papan resident during demolition work

The police arrested a resident of Kampung Papan in Pandamaran, Klang, when the authorities were carrying out demolition work earlier today.

PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan said the resident, a 57-year-old man, was disappointed with the officers on duty, resulting in him throwing glass bottles on the floor.

"Probably, the officers thought he was about to riot or go on a rampage," he told Malaysiakini.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the police for details.

Earlier, Arutchelvan said about 20 houses had been demolished, including six that were still occupied.

Based on the photographs shared with Malaysiakini earlier, several bulldozers were used for today’s demolition work.

Arutchelvan described the situation as inhumane and goes against the government’s own call to uphold justice for the people.

“Is this how a government practises fairness to the people? If the residents were given replacement homes before demolition, that is fine.

“But now, you destroyed their homes with no assurances (of being given replacement homes),” he lamented.

Malaysiakini has also reached out to Selangor State Housing and Culture Committee chairperson Borhan Aman Shah for comments.

Last month, Bernama reported Borhan as saying that the demolition work would only affect vacant houses and business premises, based on a meeting held between stakeholders and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
