AGC still waiting on police's findings on tahfiz student's death

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has yet to receive the police’s investigation report on the death of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who died 12 years ago.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar reportedly said that to date, the police have not provided the AGC with their investigation findings, which are crucial for the AGC to determine whether Wan Faris’ death featured criminal elements.

“We will request the police to submit the investigation report once it has been finalised.

“However, instructions for further investigations are continually issued to ensure the case is thoroughly examined,” New Straits Times quoted Dusuki as saying yesterday.

On Aug 20, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that police will reopen a probe into Wan Faris’ December 2013 death, with the decision coming days after the student’s family urged authorities to reopen investigations.

Wan Faris, then a Form Four student, was found in the toilet of the Nurul Aman Science Tahfiz School hostel in Kok Lanas, Kelantan.

A hostel warden had discovered his body after noticing a foul smell from the toilet. The post-mortem classified the case as a sudden death, with no criminal elements involved.

However, the Kota Bharu Coroners Court in June 2016 ruled that Wan Faris’ death was due to the actions of unidentified individuals and rejected the possibility of suicide.

On Sept 1, the teenager’s family submitted to the Kelantan government a memorandum containing three demands, including an explanation as to why the school toilet - the site of the incident - was demolished before the investigation had been concluded.
