Be cautious about inviting PAS to join govt, says Amanah Youth exco

An Amanah Youth leader has cautioned Pakatan Harapan allies to tread carefully when considering inviting PAS to join the unity government.

Amanah Youth exco Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda was responding to a proposal by Selangor PKR Youth chief Iman Haziq, who urged PAS to leave Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional (PN) and join the unity government.

While welcoming the proposal, Fadhli warned that experience and history should not be forgotten.

“I would like to remind everyone that the country’s political history shows PAS has often been a source of tension and division in the coalitions it joins,” he said in a media statement yesterday.

Fadhli (above) cited past coalitions involving PAS, including Barisan Alternatif and Pakatan Rakyat, as well as the current PN alliance, noting that almost all ended in internal conflict, contradictory decisions, and shifts in political direction.

“This political pattern - one that struggles to accept consensus and frequently clashes with its own partners - should serve as a lesson before any further steps are considered,” said the Amanah Youth leader.

On Thursday, Iman renewed his call for PAS to leave Bersatu and join the unity government amid increasingly open tensions between PAS and Bersatu within PN.

The Selangor PKR Youth leader claimed Bersatu prioritises its power agenda over the spirit of camaraderie within the PN coalition.

Previously, Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar also urged the PAS central leadership to sever ties with Bersatu, arguing that the existing cooperation no longer benefits the party’s struggle.

He said it was time for PAS to change course and work with the current government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for the sake of political stability.

“PAS joining the government ranks should not be seen as a political defeat, but rather as a magnanimous move by a party that is nearly 75 years old,” Sukri said.

Amanah’s strength

Meanwhile, Fadhli dismissed concerns that PAS’ entry into the unity government could affect Amanah’s position.

He said Amanah’s own political journey shows that the party stands on firm, principled, and consistent foundations.

“Amanah’s strength does not depend on who enters or leaves the government, but on its values, consistency, and commitment to the people,” he said.

Amanah was formed in 2015, led by founding and current president Mohamad Sabu, as a PAS splinter party following an internal election in which the Islamist party’s “technocrat” faction was wiped out in favour of the clerics.
