PN leadership transition: Hadi calls urgent meeting

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has called for an urgent Perikatan Nasional supreme council meeting, following the recent resignation of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as PN chair.

In a letter to PN supreme council members, Hadi, the deputy chairperson, said the meeting will confirm Muhyiddin’s resignation and appoint a replacement.

“For the purpose of the continuity of the PN administration, I, as the PN deputy chairperson, am of the opinion that an emergency meeting should be called immediately, in accordance with Clause 8.3(I)(b) of the PN constitution,” he said in the letter dated Jan 10.

“It is hoped that this matter will be taken into consideration and appropriate action will be taken, considering that it has been more than 10 days since the effective date of the resignation,” he added.

Muhyiddin’s resignation took effect on Jan 1, 2026.

Hadi confirmed that he had received Muhyiddin’s resignation letter on Dec 30, thanking the former prime minister for his service in leading PN.

Yesterday, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan expressed doubts that Muhyiddin and the latter’s supporters will follow proper procedures in the next PN supreme council meeting.

As such, Wan Saiful, who was sacked from Bersatu last year, said he had written to the Registrar of Societies to monitor events to ensure Bersatu’s compliance with the correct processes.

He said Muhyiddin should not chair the PN supreme council meeting, questioning if the Pagoh MP’s presence would render the meeting invalid.

Wan Saiful also said that Muhyiddin must leave the meeting once his resignation as the PN chair is confirmed, before the meeting heads into the second item on its agenda.

However, as the Bersatu president, Muhyiddin is entitled to a seat in PN’s supreme council.

PN’s upheaval

Muhyiddin stepped down as PN chairperson on Dec 30 following a crisis in the Perlis government, which saw relations between PAS and Bersatu become increasingly tense.

The upheaval followed a coup in Perlis, where eight assemblypersons - five from Bersatu and three from PAS - withdrew confidence from PAS’ Shukri Ramli as menteri besar.

Amid the perceived infighting within PN, PAS leaders had threatened to either quit the opposition coalition and pursue a fresh alliance with Umno or to take over the PN leadership themselves.

However, tempers eased when Muhyiddin resigned as PN chief, opening the door for PAS to take over the coalition.

Muhyiddin’s announcement also triggered a series of resignations by Bersatu state chairpersons, including party secretary-general Azmin Ali as Selangor PN chairperson, and Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu as Perak PN chairperson.

Hadi has since declared his party’s readiness to lead PN. However, speculation persists over Muhyiddin’s successor, further fuelled by Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s meeting with the former premier on Jan 6.

On Jan 8, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari hinted that his party has picked a candidate for PN chief, but declined to name any names.

The next day, Hadi denied that his party had submitted any names for the PN chairperson candidacy.

Instead, Hadi said that the decision has been fully entrusted to the party’s central leadership for deliberation and that it will be discussed at the next PAS central committee meeting, which has been postponed to next week.

The Marang MP also stated that PN has not met on the matter, as the coalition has no secretary after all incumbents stepped down.
