English newspapers

The Star , New Straits Times and The Sun all headlined Chua Soi Lek’s resignation from all party and government posts following the scandalous video expose of him engaging in sex with a woman he described as a “personal friend”.

The announcement of his resignation came only a day after he intransigently said that he would continue to perform his duty with the government and his party.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and the MCA leadership had expressed their empathy with Chua’s resignation and branded his act as “brave and selfless”.

Malay newspapers

Both Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian picked Chua’s resignation as front-page news.

Chinese newspaper

Nanyang Siang Pau, Sin Chew Daily and Oriental Daily similarly headlined Chua Soi Lek's decision to quit all his party and government posts.

Sin Chew Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau also that reported MCA president and Housing and Local Government Minister Ong Ka Ting would become the acting Health Minister.

Tamil newspapers

All three Tamil dailies - Malaysia Nanban, Tamil Nesan and Makkal Osai - led with Chua’s resignation.

The dailies also quoted MIC president S Samy Vellu as saying that he would be ‘changing’ the party for betterment in servicing the community.

News Straits Times believed that truants or in the characteristics of a local context, mat rempits, should be given a ‘second chance’ by including them into productive programmes rather than being simply pigeonholed as criminals.

The Sun chose to speak on the economic front. As pundits believe that this year will be a tough year for consumers given the skyrocketing inflation chart caused by rising prices of foodstuffs as a result of lower global production of wheat and milk and the biggest blow of all, fuel price hike.

Utusan Melayu spoke of the political crisis in Pakistan following the assassination of former president Benazir Bhutto.

Berita Harian applauded Chua Soi Lek’s resignation saying it was the right thing to do in order to dissolve the controversy the politician was in following the sex video expose.

Tamil Nesan commented on the shortage of cooking oil in the market.

All Nanyang Siang Pau, Sin Chew Daily and Oriental Daily commented on Chua's sex scandal. They said politicians needed to be disciplined despite having high abilities in governing the country.
