Motion to remove Rafizi as Pandan PKR chief fails at division AGM

A surprise motion to oust Rafizi Ramli as Pandan PKR chief was defeated at the division’s annual meeting today.

Pandan PKR deputy youth chief Haqimi Zamri told Malaysiakini that the motion was defeated 42-34.

Rafizi was not present at the meeting.

Haqimi alleged that the motion was raised by those who wanted to take control of the division.

“It is not for the division to decide (who is chief at this time). There had been a showcause letter, and Rafizi had answered (and was spared disciplinary action),” the youth leader said.

When contacted, Rafizi, who learned of the development from Malaysiakini, claimed it was clear that the PKR leadership was out to end him politically.

He said the motion and its defeat showed that the party is deeply split all the way to the grassroots.

He said the party won’t be able to force members to go against him, and that doing this will incite pushback and lead people to quit.

However, he also said he had chosen not to attend the division meeting today, expecting it to be a quiet affair.

He also said he didn’t attend because his time in PKR is ending, and that he had relayed this to the division.

“What PKR wants to do, I leave it to PKR. I’m not playing games. My time in PKR is almost over. I believe the party has totally lost its soul and it no longer aligns with my values,” he said.

Rafizi has drifted further from the party after being ousted as deputy president last year.

He has become a vocal critic of party president Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the prime minister, on various issues, including alleged corruption involving those close to the premier.
