Court

• The sons of the late Daim Zainuddin, Amir and Amin, as well as an individual alleged to have ties with the family, have filed an appeal at the Kuala Lumpur High Court against a Magistrate Court order allowing the MACC to issue arrest warrants against them.

  Amir and Amin’s lawyer, Nizamuddin Hamid, told Malaysiakini that the appeal was filed for several reasons, including that the duo was never informed they were suspects when MACC issued their previous Orders to Attend, which categorised them as witnesses

  Case management for the appeal is scheduled on April 27.

• The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered custodial sentences for 33 men accused of armed rioting at an entertainment outlet in Cheras, in addition to fines imposed by the magistrate’s court.

  Judge Aslam Zainuddin exercised his revisionary powers to impose the 10-month prison sentence in Kajang Prison starting today, New Straits Times reported.

  

  An arrest warrant was also issued against A Ganesan for failing to appear in court.

  They were accused of rioting at the outlet on April 5. Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan sentenced the 34 men to a fine between RM2,000 and RM3,000 on April 10 after they pleaded guilty.

  Police courted controversy in their handling of the riot after officers ordered journalists covering its aftermath to delete their footage.

Politics

• Perlis PAS denied that it is planning to topple Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah in the next state legislature meeting.

  Perlis PAS deputy chief Shahidan Kassim said there is no proof of this, adding that PAS had resolved to support Abu Bakar until the next election.

  “There is no need for a vote of confidence. PAS has the majority (in the legislature), so PAS can go and say (if it wants to take over). But that is not the PAS way,” he said.

  Speculation is rife after the Perlis legislature sitting this week was postponed just a day before it was to convene. Abu Bakar said a new date would be set soon.
