Pig farming

• Selangor DAP Youth vice chief Kusaaliny Mahendran has urged Umno and PAS to stop inflaming the pig farming issue in the state with racial and religious rhetoric.

  She said the closed-house, zero-discharge system proposed by Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki is a pragmatic and scientific solution to raising pigs without afflicting surrounding communities with foul smell and waste management problems.

  

  “The people need rational policy debate, not statements that incite hatred,” she said in a statement last night.

Strait of Malacca

• Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has warned against unilateral decisions regarding the Strait of Malacca, after Indonesia floated the idea of charging a levy for passage through the strait.

  He emphasised that Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia share an understanding of the strait and conduct joint patrols to ensure safe passage. Any change must be based on consensus.

  

  “Whatever is to be done in the Strait of Malacca must involve the cooperation of all four countries. That is our understanding - it cannot be done unilaterally.

  “This is because when we entered into a joint agreement on patrols and the security of the Strait of Malacca, that was the basis – there are no unilateral decisions,” Bernama quoted him as saying yesterday.
