  • Selangor BN information chief Jamal Yunos has lodged a police report against Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki for allegedly “instigating” hate against Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

    Jamal (above) claimed that her proposal urging the Selangor government to reconsider pig farming prompted dissenters to post the “pig in royal attire” caricature on Facebook.

    “Selangor Umno division urges authorities, including the police and the MCMC, to take action against this ‘wretched’ YB,” he said in front of the Ampang district police headquarters today.

    Additionally, Selangor Umno Youth chief Imran Tamrin said that about seven police reports were lodged today, adding that the party has also mobilised its other divisions across the state to file similar reports.

  • Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) said the refusal of a party to exercise its right of reply should not be used against the media.

    In a statement today, the press rights group expressed solidarity with Malaysiakini senior journalist B Nantha Kumar over a police raid at his home this afternoon.

    “It is deeply regrettable when the parties concerned refuse to cooperate, particularly on matters of public interest, and instead attempt to halt news reporting by lodging police reports,” Geramm said. 

Defence

  • The navy expects to receive the first of its five Maharaja Lela-class littoral combat ships (LCS) in December, Bernama reported.

    The KD Maharaja Lela will be followed by deliveries of its sister ships - KD Raja Muda Nala in April 2027 and KD Sharif Manshor in December 2027.

    Navy deputy chief Badarudin Taha said the construction of the five ships at the Lumut Naval Shipyard has overall reached 76.88 percent completion.

    In addition, construction of the three littoral mission ships in batch two at Istanbul Shipyard in Türkiye has reached 47.9 percent, with the handover expected in the fourth quarter of next year.

    The LCS project has been plagued by delays, cost overruns, and financial irregularities since the contract took effect in 2013.

  • The Federal Court has fixed June 30 to deliver its decision on the prosecution’s appeal against Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s acquittal from criminal convictions.

    Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin confirmed the date to Malaysiakini today.

    The Kuala Lumpur High Court convicted Syed Saddiq of corruption and money laundering in 2023, but the appellate court acquitted him in June last year, resulting in the present appeal before the Federal Court.

  • A Sessions Court judge in Putrajaya today has chastised the investigating officer (IO) of a sexual assault case against an eight-year-old boy, for failing to ensure a thorough investigation, Bernama reported.

    Na Li Jing was accused of committing the offence at a condominium in 2022, but the court found he only started renting the place in 2024, creating reasonable doubt in the charges, for which judge Kunasundary Marimuthu granted an acquittal.

    “It has been reiterated that an IO is to gather all evidence, both for and against the suspect, to ensure a fair trial and the proper administration of justice. However, in this case, it appeared that the IO had merely recorded statements from the witnesses before proceeding to charge the accused,” she said.

Food security

  • The impact of higher fertiliser prices due to conflict in West Asia is expected to be more visible in the second half of this year and beyond, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation chief economist Máximo Torero Cullen.

    The conflict has disrupted the supply and prices of critical inputs such as natural gas for nitrogen-based fertiliser production and sulphur for phosphate-based fertilisers, as the Strait of Hormuz channels 20 percent of the world’s natural gas and 50 percent of the world’s sulphur supply.

    This affects any country that uses fertilisers, and the reduced fertiliser usage will lead to lower crop yields and a tighter food supply, Bernama reported.
