Media freedom

• MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam urged Putrajaya to provide a transparent explanation for the basis behind a recent police raid on Malaysiakini journalist B Nantha Kumar’s home.

  In a statement yesterday, Subramaniam questioned where the “once-vocal” Pakatan Harapan leaders have gone, labelling them as leaders who previously championed media freedom loudly in the streets and on political stages.

  

  He argued that while the principle of press freedom was upheld strongly when the Madani government was in the opposition, those voices now appear “increasingly muted”.

Negeri Sembilan crisis 

• Negeri Sembilan MCA district and municipal councillors will reportedly resign from all their positions in the state effective immediately, amid ongoing political turmoil between government partners BN and Pakatan Harapan.

  Citing a statement by state liaison committee chairperson Leaw Kok Chan, Oriental Daily reported that the decision was made based on the BN component party’s political stance, in adherence to its original intention of defending ethnic rights and social justice.

  

  Leaw was quoted as affirming that the party’s state chapter believes MCA’s role and scope in the local government is “limited”, thus complicating its attempts to serve the people.

Politics

• Malacca PAS has declared its intention to contest in 16 out of 28 seats in the state, largely held by BN through Umno. PN through Bersatu holds two seats - Bemban and Sungai Udang.

  Among the seats PAS is eyeing are Merlimau, held by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, according to Malacca PAS state commissioner Zulkiflii Ismail in a statement on Facebook.

  

  He said the decision to field the party’s candidates was in line with PAS election director Sanusi Nor’s statement.

  The Malacca state assembly term will expire this December, setting the stage for the state election this year.

Accidents

• The investigation paper on the fatal accident involving a military officer suspected of drink driving will be submitted to the state prosecution director tomorrow for further action, said Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Zamzuri Isa.

  

  Police have also obtained an extension on the remand order against the officer until tomorrow to assist investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

  Twelve witnesses have been questioned as part of the investigation, Bernama quoted him as saying.

• Former Johor Bersatu associate chief Tan Lek Khang is now recovering from surgery after reportedly shooting himself by accident yesterday.

  Former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin was quoted as saying by Berita Harian that only close family members are allowed to visit.

  

  He had attempted to visit Tan at about 11.25pm last night along with Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal and Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah.

  Hamzah left about an hour later after failing to meet Tan, who was still in the operating theatre.

  It was reported that Tan accidentally shot himself yesterday evening while training at a shooting range.
