Negeri Sembilan crisis

• Subang Umno division chief Armand Azha Abu Hanifah has called for an urgent formal meeting at the highest level of the Selangor state leadership to clarify political positions and safeguard the stability of the state government from further disruption.

  Armand’s statement came in response to remarks by Selangor PKR election director Sathia Prakash Nadarajan, who suggested removing the sole Umno representative from the Selangor administration after Umno's move to topple the PKR-led government in Negeri Sembilan.

  Armand (above) criticised the proposal as politically arrogant and immature, while warning that such rhetoric could escalate tensions among governing partners.

  Armand further urged PKR’s leadership to act immediately against Sathia, arguing that failure to do so would imply the comments reflected the party’s genuine stance, potentially jeopardising political cooperation and state stability.

• Hulu Selangor Umno Youth chief Omar Al-Khattab Kasim criticised Sathia Prakash Nadarajan’s remarks as cynical, irresponsible and reflective of Selangor PKR’s failure to address its own governance weaknesses.

  In a Facebook statement, he said it was particularly troubling that PKR was using political developments in Negeri Sembilan as ammunition against Umno in Selangor, arguing that this reflected a lack of ideas.

  

  He stressed that the Negeri Sembilan political situation was a separate matter and accused certain PKR leaders in Selangor of fuelling unnecessary division within Pakatan Harapan, rather than focusing on the state’s pressing issues.

  Omar also argued that PKR should first address controversies within its own ranks before attacking others.

• Former DAP MP Tony Pua condemned any attempt to bring down an elected government through party defections or coalition realignments rather than a fresh electoral mandate, describing such moves as “backdoor” political manoeuvres that undermine democratic principles.

  

  In a statement on Facebook, while acknowledging that such actions may be legally permissible, Pua argued they are morally indefensible and contrary to the spirit of democracy, as they bypass the will of voters expressed at the ballot box.

  He accused Umno of engaging in precisely this form of political opportunism in Negeri Sembilan, alleging that its actions were carefully calculated to seize power through political engineering rather than legitimate electoral means.

Politics

• Selangor Bersatu is launching the “Democracy is Dead” campaign, following the suspension of three of its assemblypersons by speaker Lau Weng San.

  Its youth chief Afiq Asyraf Nardin said Lau had acted undemocratically by stifling the voice of the opposition, thus tarnishing the state assembly’s image.

  

  The campaign entails an online campaign as well as roadshows in Selangor, but the details have yet to be finalised.

  Yesterday, Lau suspended Gombak Setia assemblyperson Hilman Idham for two days for disregarding Lau’s instructions to sit down and stop interfering with exco member Jamaliah Jamaludin.

  Earlier, Lau suspended Taman Medan assemblyperson Dr Afif Bahardin and Kuang assemblyperson Rafiq Abdullah for three days for challenging his decision to refer Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki for disciplinary proceedings.

Energy crisis

• The Finance Ministry is considering a more targeted approach to diesel subsidies for Sabah and Sarawak, said government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.

  

  Presently, diesel sold in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan is covered by blanket subsidies, costing RM2.15 per litre at the pump.

  In Peninsular Malaysia, diesel is sold at RM5.12 per litre without subsidies, but is brought down to RM2.15 per litre for fleet card holders under the Subsidised Diesel Control System.
