  • PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the party will consult and advise a number of its MPs who attended Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad’s Bersama event on May 17.

    According to Berita Harian, PKR intends to contact the lawmakers, reminding them that their roles as elected representatives are tied to the party’s image.

    She added that MPs should remain committed to advancing the party’s ideals, rather than using their position to promote other political parties.

1MDB

  • Goldman Sachs has agreed to pay US$500 million (RM1.98 billion) to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that the bank misled shareholders over its dealings with 1MDB.

    According to Reuters, the amount was disclosed in a filing submitted on Wednesday at a US federal court in Manhattan, after both parties confirmed last month that they reached an agreement without revealing the terms.

    The lawsuit was brought by shareholders led by Swedish pension fund Sjunde AP-Fonden, who accused Goldman Sachs of lying about its role in the 1MDB scandal while repeatedly promoting its supposedly robust risk management.

    The settlement is still pending approval by a judge. Lawyers representing the shareholders described the settlement as an “outstanding result”.

Putra Heights explosion

  • Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said his government is prepared to make public the full investigation report on last year’s gas pipeline explosion at Putra Heights, Subang Jaya.

    However, it will first need feedback from the federal government, Bernama reported.

    He emphasised that the state administration is committed to transparency, as the report will be reviewed by an independent committee comprising two opposition representatives and technical experts.

Budi95

  • Kelantan Muda urged the Finance Ministry to temporarily increase the Budi95 quota to 300 litres for Aidiladha.

    Its information chief, Wee Khai Nern, pointed to the long distances for those travelling back to East Coast Peninsular Malaysia and the large number of vehicles expected on highways.

    In a statement today, he said many subsidy recipients will have exhausted their quota given the timing of the religious celebration, transforming the festivities into an additional financial burden.

  • The think-tank Social and Economic Research Initiative (Seri) today called on the government to strengthen its early screening for iron deficiency anaemia among children.

    In a statement, Seri said its study revealed the deficiency was a persistent maternal and child healthcare challenge, which has implications for Malaysia’s long-term human capital development.

    According to the group, the study also found that the condition may be costing the country about RM10.8 billion annually due to preventable cognitive losses among children.

    “Malaysia is on track to become a high-income nation, yet nearly half of our young children are anaemic. This is a preventable condition with lasting consequences on brain development, productivity, and long-term growth. The costs are already visible in our economy today,” said Seri managing director Rashaad Ali.
