  • Businessperson Albert Tei is seeking an explanation from the MCMC over alleged restrictions imposed on his social media accounts.

    According to a letter from Tei’s lawyers to MCMC, Tei discovered on June 6 that one of his Facebook videos, which supposedly referenced Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, was removed for purportedly violating the platform’s community standards.

    On the same day, the whistleblower in the Sabah mining licence corruption scandal found that he was unable to access three of his TikTok profiles, which he claims have since been inaccessible for Malaysian audiences.

    Besides demanding whether the supposed enforcement actions were directed by the MCMC, the lawyers have also requested insight from TikTok’s parent company via ByteDance System Sdn Bhd.

    The MCMC and ByteDance System have been given seven days from today to respond to the letter, failing which Tei has threatened to initiate legal proceedings against the entities.

Politics

  • PKR Youth vice-chief Nabil Halimi has challenged BN to move a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim if it feels unappreciated.

    This comes after Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh challenged Anwar to boot all BN MPs from the coalition government if PKR feels that BN plays no role in Putrajaya.

    The Umno leader said this in response to PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim saying that BN chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should not overstate the latter coalition’s role in forming the Madani government.

Crime

  • A former chief financial officer of condom manufacturer Karex Berhad claimed trial today to an insider trading charge, under the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007.

    In a statement, the Securities Commission said the former executive, Goh Chok Siang, 54, was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court over an alleged acquisition of 150,000 units of Karex shares on July 22, 2020, while he was in possession of non-public information regarding the company's intention to venture into the manufacturing and sale of gloves.

    Goh was released on bail worth RM90,000. He also had to surrender his passport to the court.

Fuel prices

  • The Finance Ministry said in its weekly announcement that fuel prices for both subsidised and unsubsidised fuel will remain unchanged for the coming week.

    While the global petroleum market appears to have stabilised over the past few weeks, the ministry cautioned that prices are still susceptible to uncertainty in physical supply, global inventory levels, and seasonal demand.

    Subsidising the fuel remains a heavy burden on government finances, which is projected to be around RM2 billion monthly for RON95 and RM1.5 billion for diesel.
