Johor polls

• Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi said he will not be defending his Rengit seat in the coming Johor election, citing his age as the main factor.

  He said he is already 69 years old, and would be 74 if he serves another five years in office. He opined that only those 50 and below should contest a state seat.

  “To me, it is inappropriate at my age to contest a state seat. (Johor Umno chief) Onn Hafiz Ghazi should give the opportunity for young leaders to contest and lead the state government,” he said in a Facebook post.

  

  He said he had made up his mind last year and had conveyed his wishes to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Onn Hafiz two weeks ago.

  In the meantime, he said he is finishing up a few tasks before nomination day, and has given his views on the characteristics of his potential successors.

Environment

• The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has said that continuous heavy rain may have caused the deaths of thousands of fish at Tasik Danau Kota in Setapak.

  Based on its initial investigations and on-site monitoring activities, DBKL said the rains could have introduced a decrease in dissolved oxygen levels, changes in water quality, as well as the entry of sediments and pollutants.

  

  In a statement today, it said that it has removed the dead fish from the lake and installed garbage traps.

  It also took water samples yesterday with the Federal Territories’ Department of Environment to analyse water quality and identify factors that contributed to the incident.
