Politics

• Reset movement member Shafizan Taib has called for a “reset” of the Kedah administration, saying it is necessary to better reflect current political realities and to provide a renewed impetus to Menteri Besar Sanusi Nor's leadership.

  He said this must include a major reshuffle of the state executive councillors line-up, political appointments in state-linked companies, local council members, and village development and security committee appointments across the state.

  Shafizan further proposed that individuals linked to Bersatu be replaced, including the two current Bersatu exco members, and suggested they be substituted with representatives from Parti Wawasan Negara.

  He said that this is in line with PAS’ reported decision to end ties with Bersatu.

Bersama

• Parti Bersama Malaysia co-leader Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad claimed that politicians from other parties, including DAP, have approached them with an interest to join the party.

  Channel News Asia reported him saying that he had, however, advised them to resign from their parties before joining, and that this must only be done once Parliament or state legislative assemblies are dissolved.

  

  Nik Nazmi reportedly said that 15 percent of Bersama's new recruits come from various Malay-based parties such as PAS and Umno.

  He also pushed back against the idea that Bersama is merely a “spoiler” meant to divide Pakatan Harapan's votes.

  “We are working hard for our support, and I hope Harapan does the same,” he was quoted as saying.

State govt policy

• Selangor MCA Youth chief Tan Jie Sen has called on the Selangor government to justify the requirement for separating halal and non-halal waste, saying the public concern is not about when the guideline was introduced, but on whether it offers any practical or environmental benefits.

  He said waste segregation policies are typically designed to improve recycling efficiency, reduce pollution and lower costs, and questioned why an additional categorisation based on halal and non-halal status is necessary when no supporting data or studies have been presented.

  Tan pointed out that if both waste streams ultimately enter the same treatment system, the rationale for the distinction is unclear, adding that the state government should explain how the guideline improves outcomes such as efficiency, cost savings or environmental impact.

  He further urged a comprehensive review of the policy, warning that it could increase operational costs for businesses and consumers, and stressed that public policy should be evidence-based, transparent and focused on measurable results.

Tax payment

• Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong has defended Section 103 of the Income Tax Act 1967, saying it is not punitive but meant to ensure orderly tax collection.

  

  Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Liew said claims that the provision gives the Inland Revenue Board excessive powers and places undue pressure on taxpayers were inaccurate.

  Bernama reported him saying that Section 103, which covers tax payment deadlines and late-payment penalties, has been in force since 1968 and is based on an international taxation principle upheld by the courts.

  Although taxpayers must first settle assessments issued by the IRB, Liew said their right to appeal remains protected.

  He added that the “pay first, appeal later” principle is supported by instalment payment options, refund provisions and interest payments in cases where excess tax is paid.
