• Social media platform operators can be fined up to RM1 million if they fail to implement the required age-verification mechanism for their users, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

  This is regarding the Online Safety Act 2025, which makes it obligatory for social media platforms to ensure users aged 16 and below do not operate social media accounts.

  Fahmi told the Dewan Rakyat this morning that under the new law, the MCMC can issue written directives to licensed social media platforms to order their compliance with the Act.

  

  "Failure to comply with the directives issued constitutes an offence and, upon conviction by the court, may result in a fine of up to RM1 million, as well as an additional fine of up to RM100,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction," he said.

  According to the minister, social media platforms also have their duties under Part 3 of the Act, and failure to comply can result in a financial penalty not exceeding RM10 million.
