• The US has returned more than US$1.37 billion (RM5.6 billion) in misappropriated 1MDB funds to Malaysia.

  Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said said in a written parliamentary reply that a substantial amount of funds and assets linked to 1MDB remain frozen or subject to forfeiture proceedings.

  

  However, she added that the exact value of the remaining assets could not be determined precisely for now due to ongoing legal proceedings and fluctuations in the market value of the assets over time.

Policy

• A group of syariah lawyers backed the government’s decision to amend the Road Transport Act to compel reckless and dangerous drivers to pay compensation to victims or surviving family members.

  Syarie Lawyers Association Malaysia said the proposed amendment is in line with Islamic principles where victims are compensated.

  

  They have also volunteered to help with drafting the amendment.
