Deputy Finance Minister Dr Awang Adek Hussin will be the BN’s choice to be the Kelantan menteri besar if the coalition manages to recapture the state from PAS in the coming general election.

He would be contesting at the Perupok state seat as well as trying to retain his Bachok parliamentary seat.

Another Umno favourite to be the leader of the state Annuar Musa looks set to have missed the chance to become the menteri besar, if BN wins the state, as he has been moved up to contest for the Ketereh parliamentary seat, leaving behind his Kok Lanas state seat.

Annuar is also the state’s Umno chief.

The Kok Lanas state seat will now be contested by Md Alwi Che Ahmad, who won the Ketereh seat in 2004.

Another Umno strongman, Mustapa Mohamed will be fighting to retain his Jeli parliamentary seat only, letting go of his Ayer Lanas state seat to his political secretary Dr Azmi Setapa.

A new face is placed in Tumpat, a parliamentary seat, in the form of Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, son of party veteran Dusuki Ahmad. He will be challenging PAS secretary general Kamarudin Jaafar for the seat.

Similarly rookie Dali Hussin, the state’s Umno youth chief, will be contesting at the Panchor state seat.

Two MPs dropped

The list of the candidates were released by Annuar at his residence in Bukit Marak this morning.

He also confirmed that Awang would be the menteri besar if BN recaptures the state from PAS, which has held the state since 1990.

He also said that Awang was also placed to retain his parliamentary seat as it was believed that PAS would be naming its deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa there.

All BN incumbents, except for Kota Bharu and Kuala Krai, have been retained to contest in the election.

Kota Bharu incumbent and vocal party critic Zaid Ibrahim is dropped and replaced by Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh.

Kuala Krai meanwhile will see Prof Dr Che Musa Che Omar, an International Islamic University senate member, replacing Razali Che Mamat.

PAS is hoping to retain its control of the state by winning more seats this time around. Umno, on the other hand, is very confident that it can capture the state.

PAS has one state seat advantage over Umno by holding 23 of the 45 total seats. Umno controls the rest. The are 14 Parliament seats in the state, with Umno/BN controlling eight and PAS six.
