A claim by a Pakatan Rakyat MP that Kuala Lumpur City Hall is riddled with corruption has irked city mayor Abdul Hakim Borhan who retorted that they should show proof.

dr lolo Newly-elected Titiwangsa MP Dr Lo’ Lo’ Ghazali today that corruption involving City Hall officers were raised during a meeting between Abdul Hakim and 10 Federal Territories MPs from the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

“As you all already know, corruption is synonymous with City Hall,” claimed Lo’ Lo’ - who is the sole PAS representative in Kuala Lumpur - during a press conference after the meeting.

Abdul Hakim explained that one case involving alleged corruption which the Pakatan MPs brought up during the meeting involved City Hall contractors and not its officers.

He added that from now on, contractors would have to wear uniforms that specify that they are private contractors commissioned by City Hall.

Abdul Hakim also told reporters that City Hall was closely monitored by the Federal Territories Ministry and it has its own integrity board to look into matters of corruption.

Four proposals from Pakatan

Led by Bandar Tun Razak MP Khalid Ibrahim, who is also Selangor mentri besar, the Pakatan MPs had proposed to Abdul Hakim that:

  • Offices be established for the 10 opposition MPs at City Hall headquarters

  • City Hall appoint ‘assistant managers’ in the 10 constituencies to liaise with the MPs on local issues

  • City Hall appoint the 10 MPs as ex-officio members of the City Hall advisory board to discuss policy issues

  • City Hall cancel the Federal Hill development project

Abdul Hakim revealed that he would be consulting the Federal Territories Ministry on the first three proposals and would look into issues raised on the Federal Hill project.

Residents in Federal Hill, opposite KL Sentral, are up in arms over the use of a piece of reserve land for commercial purposes in their area.

All 10 Pakatan Rakyat MPs - who have dubbed themselves the Federal Territories Pakatan Parliamentarian Secretariat - were present at the meeting today.

Last Friday, seven of the secretariat members had a similar meeting with Federal Territories Minister Zulhasnan Rafique.

The secretariat members are expected to also hold meetings with ministry officials during a retreat on April 17 and 18.
