Opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim called today for the prosecution of judges and politicians allegedly shown brokering judicial appointments in a video clip.

The call came after a royal inquiry into the 2001 video clip reportedly ruled it was genuine and identified a former chief judge as one of the participants.

Anwar, who was responsible for exposing the recordings, warned against a "halfhearted attempt" at restoring the judiciary's integrity following the scandal.

"(The government) should take this report to its logical culmination, which is the investigation and prosecution of those whom the report deems to have deviated the course of justice," he said.

"You must correct the system. This is a major issue affecting Malaysians at large."

Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, unleashed a furore last year by releasing the clip.

It allegedly shows a lawyer telling former chief justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim he would put him forward for a top job.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently announced measures to reform the judiciary, including the formation of an independent commission to appoint new judges.
