Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia revealed that he accepted an apology by Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) after the latter met with him personally today.

parliament speaker pandikar amin He also stated that no further action will be taken against the MP despite pressure from several Barisan Nasional (BN) backbenchers who want Gobind to be referred to the parliamentary privileges committee to face disciplinary action.

The backbenchers want the opposition politician to face the music for criticising Pandikar Amin’s decision to slap him with a two-day suspension after the duo's exchange yesterday.

"He came to my office and apologised to me personally...and I have accepted his apology. He also told me that he will not do it again," the Speaker told the House.

However, two BN backbenchers were unhappy with the decision.

"He (Gobind) insulted the House and the Speaker. He said he was chosen by the people and would be an insult to them if he was thrown out of the House. I'm worried if other MPs would follow suit," said Puad Zarkashi (BN-Batu Pahat).

Puad was seconded by another backbencher Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan).

"As an MP, I'm not satisfied because some MPs do not respect the rules set by the House as they say something unparliamentary freely. It will be worse...I don't agree with it," said Bung.

Pandikar Amin remained firm with his decision. However, the saga did not end there.

'I did not apologise'

At a press conference held at the Parliament lobby later, Gobind denied apologising to the Speaker.

gobind singh deo Maintaining that he had "done nothing wrong", the MP said Pandikar Amin might have misunderstood him.

"At no point did I ever apologise to him for what happened yesterday. I just came to his office to seek clarification on my two-day suspension whether tomorrow is included," he said.

On that note, Gobind said he did apologise to the Speaker during their five-minute meeting, but this was not in relation to yesterday’s incident.

"I only said 'sorry to trouble you' (as a courtesy) before we meet someone. He might have mistaken me. Now that he has accepted my 'apology', he makes it more difficult for me," he added.

Asked on the possibility of him facing further action since he has not apologised, an unfazed Gobind replied: "Just leave it to them to decide what the punishment is."

The MP, who is the son of DAP stalwart and fellow MP Karpal Singh, said he will meet the Speaker tomorrow to clarify the confusion over the apology.
