LIVE | Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has granted Najib Abdul Razak house arrest.

However, the arrangement is conditional on the jailed former prime minister paying a RM50 million fine.

Najib must also comply with all conditions imposed under the conditional pardon. If he breaches any of those conditions, the conditional pardon is cancelled, and he must immediately return to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

In 2024, the Pardons Board had already reduced his jail sentence in the SRC International case from 12 years to six, and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.

This meant he was due for release on Aug 23, 2028, or on Aug 23, 2029 if he fails to settle the fine.

However, today’s reprieve does not necessarily mean Najib is out of the woods, as he is still facing several civil and criminal proceedings linked to the 1MDB scandal, including an ongoing appeal against a 15-year prison sentence for a heist that the judge compared to Attila the Hun.

Harapan top 3 leaders call for meeting

1pm: Top Pakatan Harapan leaders have called a meeting today to discuss the latest development in Najib Abdul Razak's case, according to party sources.

Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet with the coalition’s top leaders - DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu - later this evening, according to sources.

The meeting is believed to be over Najib's house arrest and DAP’s position in the government.

Malaysiakini has learnt that the meeting will be held at Anwar's office in Putrajaya at around 5.30pm.

Harapan had opposed granting additional clemency to Najib, with its presidential council issuing a statement before the previous Pardons Board meeting, stating that individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve the full sentences handed down by the courts.

Waiting for further instructions

1pm: Najib's lawyer, Farhan Shafee, says he is waiting on further instructions on the former premier's pardon.

"I am awaiting instructions regarding the latest developments. I do not want to provide any incorrect information," Farhan (below) tells Harian Metro.

House arrest until 2028

12.40pm: The statement adds that the conditional pardon for Najib will allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of the fine.

The decision, conveyed by the Legal Affairs Division under the Prime Minister's Department in a statement, comes after today's meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board.
