Najib’s house arrest

- The Prison Department is expected to issue standard operating procedures (SOPs) for convicted former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s house arrest soon.

Astro Awani reported Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar as saying the SOPs would detail matters relating to visits, security and monitoring of the former prime minister’s movements.

Elaborating, Dusuki said Najib must first pay the RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court Registry before the house arrest process can proceed.

Yesterday, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest, provided the former Pekan MP pays a RM50 million fine and complies with all conditions.

Dusuki confirmed to Malaysiakini that the pardon applies only to the jail sentence imposed on Najib in the SRC International case, in which he was convicted of seven counts of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power, and money laundering involving more than RM42 million.

Racial issue

- Bukit Aman’s Classified Criminal Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation into a viral theatre performance video allegedly mocking the five principles of the Rukun Negara and containing racially sensitive remarks.

Bernama reported Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus saying that the initial report was lodged at the Jalan Tun Razak Police Station yesterday, after a complainant spotted the video on Instagram account @THEFEVERKINETIC.

The clip, which was believed to have been deleted from Instagram before reportedly being re-shared on Facebook, features five actors reciting the Rukun Negara’s five principles alongside statements that are allegedly racially sensitive.

The Fever Kinetic, an intercultural physical theatre group reportedly founded by a Malaysian choreographer, operates in both Malaysia and London.

According to Bernama, the clip is believed to be from one of the group’s performances at the 2018 Theatre for The Arts event and was later re-uploaded online in conjunction with this year’s Malaysia Day celebrations.
