Star highlighted the possibility of Malaysians working in Singapore losing their jobs as the island republic faces a recession. The daily also frontpaged people’s unhappiness with the authorities’ decision to rename Jalan Alor as Jalan Kejora.

New Straits Times, meanwhile, headlined the news of ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra being sentenced to two years’ jail for corruption. Thaksin is currently in exile in Britain.

Berita Harian also led with news of Thaksin, who was found guilty of bribery.

Utusan Malaysia, meanwhile, frontpaged the appointment of Zaki Azmi as the new chief justice. It also highlighted the appointments of Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Arifin Zakaria as the court of appeal president and chief judge of Malaya respectively.

Commenting on the government’s latest move to inject RM5 billion into government-backed asset management company Valuecap, New Straits Times said the government must also ensure that banks continue to make credit available to the services industry and SMEs, which will now become key drivers for growth.

Utusan said it is high time the government improved working standards in the country, especially in terms of wages, to increase productivity. It added that steps to reduce the country's dependence on foreign workers must be implemented immediately.
