Kuala Lumpur mayor Ab Hakim Borhan today confirmed that there would be no change of name for the popular Jalan Alor, a lane renowned globally for its street food.

Ab Hakim confirmed this to reporters this morning following a meeting with the Federal Territory - Kuala Lumpur road-naming committee.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall has originally agreed to rename the street as Jalan Kejora as part of a rebranding exercise, only to face severe protests from traders, opposition MPs as well as the public.

Ab Hakim today said the reversal of the DBKL decision was as a result of the public outcry against the name-change.

He said the KL road-naming committee was aware of the significance of the name to the people, businesses and tourists.

Earlier, DBKL had said that the decision to rename the road was planned three years ago. It also added that other roads in the Bukit Bintang area in KL would be similarly renamed after planets to create a new image.

But the change of name from Jalan Alor to Jalan Kejora proved to be an unpopular move, with the Bukit Bintang member of parliament Fong Kui Lun leading the protest.

Traders and residents of Jalan Alor also embarked on a signature campaign to protest the change.

The matter had then gone to the attention of Federal Territories Minister Zulhasnan Rafique who was believed to have given his support to retain the old name of Jalan Alor.
