The flood situation in Terengganu and Kelantan worsened today with more than 6,899 people evacuated until this morning, from 4,140 people yesterday.

In Pahang, there was no change in the flood situation and the number of evacuees remained at 29 since yesterday.

A spokesman at the Terengganu flood operations room told Bernama that 679 families, comprising 3,484 people, had been evacuated in four districts in the state from only 1,743 people yesterday.

He said 1,556 of the evacuees were from Besut, which is the worst affected district, followed by Setiu (964), Hulu Terengganu (609) and Marang (355).

A total of 51 evacuation centres had been opened to accommodate the flood victims, he added.

He said the water level at Sungai Besut, Sungai Setiu, Sungai Nerus and Sungai Marang had exceeded the danger mark.

Two roads, Jalan Kuala Berang-Sungai Tong and Jalan Kuala Berang to Tasik Kenyir are closed to light vehicles while only one lane of Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kota Bharu, Kelantan at Km29 is opened to traffic.

Water levels reach alert level

In Kelantan, 3,415 people had been evacuated until 10am today, from 2,397 people yesterday.

A spokesman at the state flood operations control centre said the evacuees, involving 620 families and currently staying at 26 evacuation centers, were from four districts - Jeli (1,844 people at nine centres), Tanah Merah (346 people at seven centres), Kuala Krai (604 people at seven centres) and Pasir Mas (621 at three centres).

He said all trunk roads in the state were passable to all vehicles, except the stretch at Kampung Kajang and Kampung Rahmat which had been closed to light vehicles.

Meanwhile, the state drainage and irrigation department, in a statement posted on its website, states that the water level at seven main rivers in Kelantan has reached the alert level, while at Sungai Semerak in Pasir Puteh, the water has risen to 1.52 metres, but still below the alert level of 2 metres.

The rivers which water level have exceeded the alert level are Sungai Galas in Dabong at 34.94 metres (alert level is 32 metres), Sungai Lebir in Tualang at 27.08 metres (27 metres), Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai at 23.54 metres (20 metres), Sungai Kelantan in Kusial at 16.76 metres (12 metres), Sungai Kelantan at the Customs Jetty in Kota Baharu, which has risen to 4.39 metres (3 metres), Sungai Golok in Jenob at 23.74 metres (21.50 metres) and Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang at 8.34 metres (7 metres).

In Pahang, the flood situation in Temerloh and the Cameron Highlands remains the same with 25 people still at the two evacuation centres since yesterday.

A spokesman at the Pahang police operations room said 12 of the evacuees were from Kampung Kuang, Lanchang, currently staying at the Taman Murni community hall, and 13 others were evacuated to the Ringlet community hall in the Cameron Highlands.

He also said two roads in Bera - Jalan Kampung Orang Asli Chuat and Jalan Kampung Orang Asli Ibam - were still closed to light vehicles as they were under a metre deep of water.
