The Selangor DAP has picked a number of first-time parliamentarians and state assemblypersons as part of its new central committee line-up with Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua ( photo ) leading the charge.

tony pua dap pc 250507 smiles In the party elections held at Kelana Jaya Community Hall today, newcomer Pua who joined DAP last year, was the top vote-getter (193 votes) out of a crowded field of 31 candidates.

The final 15 included a number of other new faces, most notably Charles Santiago (Klang MP) and Teo Nie Chang (Serdang MP).

One-third, or five, of the elected 15 are women. Hannah Yeoh, who is state assemblyperson for Subang, scored the third highest vote (168), behind party veteran and state representatative for Kg Tunku, Lau Weng San (174).

Interestingly, M Manoharan, the Kota Alam Shah state assemblyperson who is being detained under the Internal Security Act, failed to make it to the final 15.

He garnered 69 votes out of the total 229 eligible votes.

The new central committee met after the election and in turn picked incumbent Selangor DAP chief Ean Yong Hian Wah (Seri Kembangan state rep) to serve for another term.

Pua was elected deputy state chief, while Santiago was tabbed as one of the committee's two vice-chairpersons.

State executive councillor Ronnie Liu and State Assembly speaker Teng Chang Khim are not given any committee post and will both sit in the central committee as ordinary members.
