It is best for organisers not to involve underage children in their campaigns, said Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today.

khalid ibrahim Speaking at a press conference in Shah Alam, the state leader said this was based on the advice he received from Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj of Selangor whom he met recently.

"I have discussed with the Sultan and he advised the state government to be more careful with any programmes involving underage children," he said, adding that young people above the age of 18 should be roped in to be trained as leaders for tomorrow.

Previously, it was reported that the sultan was displeased with teenagers participating in the 16-day 'Ride for Change' campaign organised by the grassroots coalition, Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (Jerit).

He also reportedly advised Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar to act against those who exploited the children.

One-sided information?

Asked if the Sultan was fed with one-sided information from the police, Abdul Khalid replied: "I am not sure. Maybe the police might not have the right information and maybe they have information that these (children) are being used."

However, the menteri besar stressed that this should not deter the people from coming forward to express their views.

"If we want to have children involved, we have to get their parents’ consent... The Pakatan-led government will never stop them from doing so if the children’s security is taken care of," he said.

On another matter, Abdul Khalid said Pakatan Rakyat will continue to hold discussions on PAS’ intention to implement the Islamic hudud laws.

He also said that PAS has the responsibility of educating the people about Islamic laws.

PAS' intention of implementing the hudud laws, as expressed by party vice-president Husam Musa, has drawn flak from various quarters including Pakatan Rakyat member DAP.
