MCA’s central political education bureau has expressed concern over the police investigation carried out into the Bandar Mahkota Cheras fracas, fearing it could contain "potential abuses".

Pre-judging aside, Gan Ping Sieu, who is acting as the bureau head told Malaysiakini yesterday that he was "sure that only police officers who were not involved in the fracas would be roped in for the investigation process".

"Hence, it is not surprising for the public to have a lack of confidence whenever such investigations are carried out," he said.

Two days ago, deputy inspector-general of police Ismail Omar said the police would "conduct a probe against the personnel involved" in the rough handling of 24-year-old mechanic Chang Jiun Haur and his employer Chan Siew Meng, 32.

Ismail had said this in response to a Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) report in a public inquiry that was released three days ago, indicating that police and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel had used excessive force against Chang and Chan.

Integrity of police in question

Previously, Gan had urged the police force and Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar to take action against errant officers that were involved during the fracas.

He said charges must be preferred against the officers in order to restore the confidence of the public in the nation's police force.

But according Ismail, the outcome of the findings showed that police had given their full co-operation to Suhakam's inquiry.

However, Gan, who is also Chang’s legal adviser, had a different take, saying that many FRU personnel who were called for the Suhakam interrogation had "suddenly turned blind and deaf".

"Amazingly, they claimed that they did not see or hear of any police beating incident despite the presence of so many other witnesses. I would think this gives reason to question the independence and integrity of the police," said Gan.
