Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo will file an emergency motion to discuss in the Dewan Rakyat the pressing issue of the abuse of police detainees.

parliament gobind singh ban over nazri mistake 251108 03 Gobind, in a press statement today said he submitted a notice to the speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, stating his intention to move the motion at the outset of the next Dewan sitting on Feb 16.

The motion refers to the death of A Kugan while in police custody last month.

Kugan, 22, died at the Taipan police station in USJ on Jan 20 after being in detention for five days. He was being held under a two-week remand to facilitate investigations into several luxury car theft cases.

His death, which has been classified as murder , created an uproar and has tainted the image of the police force in the country.

The police, according to Gobind, are given powers to detain people for investigations.

"However, many, if not more, suspects are complaining of assault during attention. Some have even died during custody," he said.

"This, to my mind, makes the matter one of considerable public importance."

Home Minister urged to do more

Gobind also today slammed Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar for his "appalling attitude".

"The home minister should look into ways and means of improving our police force," he said. "This he has failed to do."

Kugan's family has decided on a second post-mortem to dispute initial findings which concluded that his death was caused by fluid in the lungs.

Tissue samples from the deceased will be sent to Australia for analysis. Results are expected in a week.
