The complete list of nominees for the Asia's first independent music awards - AVIMA 2009 - is finally out.
And it has some good news for local alternative music fans as Malaysia leads the way with 36 nominations.
Among the Malaysian contenders are Pop Shuvit (
left
), Estrella, Melissa Indot, Yuna and Altimet.
Top Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia indie acts such Thaitanium, Everybody Loves Irene, Up Dharma Down, Elemental Gaze, Electrico, The Out of Body Special, The Great Spy Experiment and Taken by Cars also made it into the final list.
Indian acts also made it to the nominees' list with electro-rock group Shaair and Func notching four nominations each.
Other major awards contenders came from China (Rhymebot), Japan (Jojouka), Hong Kong (Violent Jokes), UAE (Juliana Down) and Korea (duonoreply).
The awards will be held as a global web event that will take place on March 29, 2009.
Huge talents on show
"We're not the Grammy's, and not even close to the glamour of the MTV Asia Awards, but in terms of support, AVIMA 2009 is perhaps one of the biggest supported music awards in the world.
"In fact, with over 16 countries participating, it is definitely the biggest independent music awards in the world," said Siva Chandran, founder of AVIMA 2009 and Managing Editor of Voize.my
He added that it had been a painstaking round of judging for the team, taking almost one week of going through close to 1,000 songs from 16 countries across Asia.
"It has been a mammoth task to contact more than 3,000 independent artistes, receive their song nominations and then filtering them down into their respective categories.
"What kept us going was the amazing talent we were exposed to during the judging process. And all the acts nominated for AVIMA are definitely of international standards. I won't be surprised if we see these acts charting in Europe and US soon," he added.
AVIMA (Asia Voice Independent Music Awards) is the second independent music awards organized by Voize.my, an Asian lifestyle and entertainment website.
The first was the recently concluded - on Jan 17, 2009 - successful VIMA (Voice independent Music) awards, Malaysia's first independent music awards.
