The police are waiting for instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers before taking action against 11 personnel suspected of being involved in the death of 22-year-old car theft suspect Kugan Ananthan.

police deputy inspector general ismail omar Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar said any further action would depend on the decision by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail after he studies the investigation papers which will also include the second post-mortem report.

"Appropriate action will be taken once the AG makes a decision," he was quoted as saying by Bernama .

He added that the police's findings which will be submitted to the AG is based on facts and statements recorded, including that of the pathologists who conducted the post-mortem.

Kugan had died at the Taipan police station in Subang Jaya on Jan 20, five days after he was arrested.

Following the emergence of a video clip which revealed severe lacerations on the body and immense public pressure, Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail reclassified the case as murder.

Subsequently, 11 police personnel were reassigned to desk duty pending investigations.

'Starved and severely beaten'

The independent post mortem report conducted by a Universiti Malaya Medical Centre pathologist revealed that Kugan endured severe beatings and was also starved during his incarceration.

kugan ananthan funeral 230109 The post-mortem found that Kugan had died of kidney failure due to the assault. The beatings had caused a breakdown in his muscle cells which then congested the blood flow and resulted in kidney failure.

The post-mortem was commissioned by Kugan's family after they were dissatisfied with the first report tendered by the Serdang Hospital which stated that he had died due to fluid accumulation in his lungs.
