Those charged for last year’s anti-ISA and commemoration of Bersih rally candlelight vigil today had their hearing dates fixed at the Sessions Court.

One of the hearing dates was Nov 10 to 12 which coincidentally falls on the Bersih Rally’s second anniversary on Nov 10. The other hearing date is on Dec 8 to 10.

bersih 21 charged in petaling jaya session court 230109 tony puah According to Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua’s blog, he mentioned that the Nov 10 date for the hearing is “symbolic” as not only is it the 2nd anniversary of the Bersih Rally, but also the anniversary for the arrest of the 22 people at the candlelight vigil.

Last November, 22 people, aged from 25 to 62, were arrested at the vigil. Among them were Tony Pua, Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu, Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San and MBPJ councillor Tiew Fei Chin.

Catholic priest Paulino Francesco Miranda and lawyer S Ashok Kandiah, were also among the 22 charged.

Also charged were K Raman, G Ramish, Augustine Gan Liam Tee, Andrew Ng Yew Han, Lim Cheng Inn, Ooi Suan Huah, Ambrose Poh Teik Huat, Johny Andu @ Abu Bakar Adnan, K Thengaran, Ong Boon Keong, Mohd Fasya Mohd Tajudin, Goh Jin Kiat, Henry Hor @ Henry James Hor, Syed Ahmad Syed Hassan, Mohd Khairul Anuar Mohd Jamil and Goh Chien Yee.

Charged under Section 27 of Police Act

Those charged were mostly represented by Gobind Singh Deo and Lim Lip Eng.

Bail was set at RM1,500 in one surety for each of the accused.

bersih 1st year anniversary pj vigil arrest 111108 The group was charged with illegal assembly and also faced a second charge of failing to adhere to a police officer’s order to disperse from the Petaling Jaya city council field.

The 22 were accused of committing the offences during an anti-ISA vigil at the MBPJ compound in Petaling Jaya from 9pm to 10.10pm on Nov 9 last year.

They were charged under Section 27 of the Police Act (for both the offences) and face a possible fine of between RM2,000 and RM10,000 and/or a jail term of not more than one year for each charge.

Meanwhile, it was slightly chaotic at the mention today as the Sessions judge in charge was on leave causing the case to be transferred to another Sessions Court.

During the mention, Sessions judge Nozila Ayub had to tell the crowd to be silent three times.

Nozila was also unhappy that both Liu and Lau were not present at the mention as they were at the Selangor state assembly. However, she later accepted their reasons for being absent.
