A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at 12.57pm today in Thalaud Island, 975km east of Lahad Datu, Sabah.

The Malaysian Meteorological Services Department said in a statement to Bernama that the earthquake occurred at 3.8 degrees North and 127.0 degrees East of Thalaud Island.

There was no tsunami threat.
