Residents of Damansara Damai claim upgrading works to the main road that connects Kepong to Sungai Buloh are nowhere near completion despite claims that they would be open for use this month.

One news report dating December 2003 announced a January 2004 commencement date for the three-phased project to alleviate traffic congestion - involving elevated U-turns, flyovers, a bridge, and a 'dedicated ramp or loop for motorists' - and said it would be completed by June 2005.

Another news report dating March 10, 2005, announced that the first phase of the project - costing RM83 million - had already begun and would be completed by September of this year.

One advertisement by a housing developer in the area promised 'No More Jam! Easy Access!' to prospective buyers of its plush condominium project. The same advertisement also boasted of a new 'six-lane dual carriageway with flyovers and expected to be completed by September 2006.'

Damansara Damai resident S Manikavasagam, who is opposition party People's Justice Party (PKR) vice-youth chief, has conceded that some works, such as the bridge at Sierremas and the U-turn at Sri Damansara have been completed or at near-completion.

"In view of the fact that Public Works Minister S Samy Vellu's proposal to the Treasury involved a RM100 million contract, answers as to why in some places there are no works to speak of are needed," said Manikvasagam when contacted.

"I am giving Samy Vellu seven days to respond," he said, adding that he will be meeting the residents next Sunday over the matter.

"Failing a satisfactory response from the works minister, we will organise protests," he said further.
