200 injured in LRT collision

More than 200 people were injured after two LRT trains along the Kelana Jaya line collided in an underground tunnel near Kuala Lumpur City Centre last night.

Rescuers had to evacuate the injured through the narrow tunnel. At least 47 were seriously injured.

A driverless train ferrying 213 passengers collided with a faulty train that was being manually tested by a driver.

The manually tested train had failed to properly coordinate with the command centre.

Celebrities, cops and a joke

A Facebook user who joked that Nilai 3 in Negeri Sembilan was in Selangor is being investigated by the Nilai police for causing “public alarm”.

Police, in all seriousness, stressed that Nilai 3 was in Negeri Sembilan and not Selangor.

The joke started after celebrity Neelofa and her husband Muhammad Haris Mohd Ismail were not charged for an interstate shopping trip from Selangor to Negeri Sembilan on May 2, despite a travel ban due to Covid-19.

They were, however, charged for not wearing a face mask and not registering at the premises.

But throughout the legal process, the celebrity courted more controversy after allegedly failing to wear a face mask when charged in court.

Neelofa was then summoned by police over the court incident, only to face yet another SOP violation claim when she got into a car with three other people after giving her statement to the police.

The third movement control order (MCO 3.0) limits three people to a vehicle. Neelofa said she was only giving her lawyer a ride to a nearby location.

Reminder: The revised MCO 3.0 takes effect today.

Vaccines for the elderly

Tomorrow is the last day where the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is reserved for the elderly (60 or older).

The take-up has been slow, compared to when the voluntary programme was opened to everyone earlier this month which saw all appointments filled in less than four hours.

Health experts called for a more aggressive push to register the elderly for vaccination. After tomorrow (May 26), registration will be opened to all.

Private medical personnel administering the AstraZeneca vaccine have been asked to show recipients the filled syringe after complaints of under-dosing.

Another such recipient confirmed receiving a top-up jab after filing a complaint.

  • 6,509 new cases yesterday (May 24), the sixth consecutive day where cases are above 6,000.

  • Daily deaths hit another record high at 61 fatalities. The death toll now stands at 2,309.

What else is happening?

  • The Resorts World Genting casino finally stopped operations under MCO 3.0 yesterday. It had continued to operate despite a directive to close by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri last Friday. Multiple sources pointed to the Finance Ministry that enabled the casino to continue operations.

  • Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's latest graft trial involving the Foreign Visa System commenced with the prosecution seeking to prove that he received millions in ringgit in kickbacks over the contract.

  • The Malaysian Bar urged Putrajaya to prioritise the Covid-19 vaccination for those working in the judicial and legal services due to their regular contact with detainees who are kept in detention centres which have a high risk of Covid-19 outbreaks. 

  • Eateries expressed concern that they will lose more business as shorter business hours under a revised MCO 3.0 come into effect today.

  • Police said they are wrapping up an investigation into claims that a state assemblyperson "set up" a rape and will submit the investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers soon.
