The Madani coalition failed to capture the Sungai Bakap state seat from Perikatan Nasional in the July 6 by-election.
Worse yet, the coalition's vote share dropped compared to last year as non-Malays skipped the ballot boxes.
The unhappiness among non-Malays was not confined to Penang, as dinner guests at a banquet in Selangor also cheered when DAP's Lim Lip Eng announced the loss.

Matriculation promise hiccup
The government's promise to give all 10A SPM students a spot in the matriculation programme hit a snag on Friday.
That day the government announced the results of appeals to join the programme.
However, dozens of students assisted by MCA - who did score 10As - still failed to get a spot.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, however, assured that the government was in the midst of addressing the issue.

Another Home Ministry bill deferred
Another bill tabled by the Home Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat has been deferred.
On Tuesday, minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail decided to send the bill on drug rehabilitation to the Parliament Special Select Committees on health and security.
This was amid pushback against the legislation on matters such as the involvement of doctors and the ministry's approach to decriminalising addiction.
Previously, the constitutional amendments on citizenship - which was also tabled by Saifuddin - were also deferred as lawmakers from both sides railed against the bill.
