Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday criticised those who believed that success and intelligence required English mastery as “misguided elite groups”.
He indicated that learning both English and Bahasa Malaysia was important.
He also said that all Malaysians should focus on empowering the Malay language.
Once this is achieved, he said, it would be easier to focus on enhancing the learning of other languages, including English, Chinese, and Tamil.
Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming, however, opined that Anwar’s approach risked alienating those who spoke English regularly and that there were better ways to promote Malay fluency.

Johor weekend switch
Johor will be reverting to Saturday-Sunday weekends starting next year.
This is the third time that Johor has switched weekend days.
Before 1994, weekends in Johor were Friday and Saturday - a policy which was reinstated in 2015.
The switch was decided by Johor’s royal family, which ordered the state government to implement it.
Some Johor Harapan leaders have lauded the move as being good for business.

Selangor flood blame game
Selangor PAS leaders are trying to blame the state government for floods which hit Gombak, Shah Alam, and Kuala Selangor last week.
Selangor PAS Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said it was embarrassing that Selangor still experiences floods after billions were allocated to tackle the issue.
Another Selangor PAS Youth leader opined that the problem could be solved by a change in menteri besar.
An aide to the menteri besar shot back, saying that part of the flooding was caused by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s choice of a contractor to build flood barriers when the latter was the minister in charge.
