It's the first day of school, but not everyone is happy to start out in a new environment.

This year marks a series of firsts for Malaysian schools. Starting this year, pupils from Standard One to Three will no longer have to face mid-term and year-end exams, with the focus instead being on building character.

There is also the zero-reject policy, which ensures that all children, especially those with special needs or are undocumented, have access to education.

Some kids have also started wearing black school shoes, ahead of the compulsory implementation in 2021.
