Joining Hands for Conservation In ‘Save Our Rainforest Race 2014’ – First In-City Forest Race

Kuala Lumpur – 10 January 2014 – Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (PEKA), a prominent Malaysian rainforest conservation advocate, is proud to be organising the first In-City Forest Race on 29 March 2014 at Hutan Simpan Sg. Besi, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur .

Known as ‘ Save Our Rainforest Race 2014’ (SORR 2014) , the race is a 10km peaceful walk aimed at bringing together the community to raise awareness on rainforest conservation and encourage the replanting of trees.

According to the organising committee of SORR, the success of SORR 2013 held at the Chamang Waterfalls in Bentong Pahang, spurred their decision this year to bring the race into the heart of the city.  The race will be held at Hutan Simpan, Sg Besi, Cheras, a gazetted forest reserve of 42 hectares.  The committee also adds that by having the race at Hutan Simpan, Sg Besi, Cheras, they will be able to raise awareness and encourage urban city dwellers to join them in the efforts of rainforest conservation”.  This year PEKA is expecting a far larger number of participants for SORR and is targeting at garnering at least 2,000 entries.

The main objectives of SORR 2014 is to raise the awareness on the importance of saving the rainforest to help maintain a sustainable environment for the current and future generations and raise funds for PEKA’s future awareness campaigns and educational programs.

The race will involve a 10km trail towards a designated site for the replanting of trees. Along the way, participants will have opportunity to learn and appreciate nature by completing activities or tasks at specific checkpoints. Once at the designated site, teams will have to plant their tree saplings at their allocated spots. Teams will then race towards the finish line.

Registration for SORR 2014 is currently open. Those who are interested to participate in the race, must form a team of two. Participation fee is RM80 per person, which will include a race pack comprising of the race number bibs, t-shirts, a tree sapling for replanting and refreshments for breakfast and lunch. All proceeds from this race will be channelled towards PEKA’s future reforestation efforts such as purchasing rainforest tree saplings and tree-planting activities. Closing date for registration is 16 th March 2014.
