Malaysia is today the talk of the entire world. Here is a nation that has come under the radar of governments and citizens around the world and all for the wrong reasons.

Can Umno-BN escape this mega-scoop on Malaysia? Will it stealthy slither out of this missing jet aircraft crisis? Or will it rise from this arduous trial as a world role model for crisis management and crisis communication?

Ten days have come to pass (at the time of writing these thoughts down), and the government of Malaysia has still no breakthrough information to announce to the global audience on the fate of the ill-fated jet aircraft except to keep rehashing the same bits and pieces news.

   

What you read or watch or hear in all the local mainstream media would give one the impression that we Malaysians have an impeccable government at work in the face of a crisis that has far-reaching global consequences and impact.

In fact there is so much of media spin. And that includes a radio station even blurting a frequent commercial to subscribe to a private channel for news on the crisis. How unethical!

But with the global burst of news from reputed international media and the speedy reports of on-line media increasingly reveal much to be desired of the Umno-BN government in Malaysia.

Or should Malaysians instead sing in chorus that the world is lying and poor Malaysian leaders are being victimised and bullied?

It is sad that in this age of speed, technology, acute awareness of security measures, Malaysia has been earning the wrath of several nations.

China is not mincing its words.

Vietnam did not hesitate to raise alarms over Malaysian authorities’ lack of cooperation.

Al Gore spoke his mind in a razor-sharp manner, too.

Numerous reports claim that governments around the region and the globe had been kept waiting for official updates and directions from Malaysia before they could mobilise or re-mobilise support. Not only that. Even hundreds of media personnel on the ground were kept waiting for the prime minister’s crucial press conference and only seen to walk away without taking pressing and crucial urgent questions from the media.

As the world of concerned citizens and leaders pour out their frustrations, anguish and hope against hope 10 days in a row, there appears two words that seem quite apt a description and consistent with the Umno-BN led government.

Still wrapped in mystery

First, is mystery.

The Altantuya Shaariibuu murder is still wrapped in mystery. Despite having global interest as it involves a potent concoction of arms purchases and a foreign national, the murder of the sole Mongolian national remains an unsolved mystery till this date.

The circumstances connected to the murder are equally mysterious. Till today the world does not know all of the following:

  • Why she was killed;
  • Why she was killed in such a manner that left not a single limb or marrow at the crime scene;
  • Why was the deadly C4 plastic bomb allegedly used on her after she was said to be shot with live bullets at close range;
  • Why were her immigration records missing;
  • Who is the killer;
  • Who is the plotter;
  • Why did a VIP allegedly text message a prime suspect who was being detained by police.
  • And equally mystifying is why did the court rule out motive as not important to the case in question.
And now we have this missing jet mystery.

People are asking many questions which only seem to be getting the same answers from the Malaysian leaders. It is either that we are still investigating or we cannot tell you now or we are waiting for information from assisting partner governments or worst, “don’t speculate” warnings.

Ten days have come to pass and the world does not know in which direction the huge plane flew in. Is it then not surprising if we read of governments telling Malaysia not to withhold information?

The question is will this aircraft fate too end up like Altantuya’s fate? Pray God it does not. Whether it is one life or 239 lives, a government, its institutions and its leaders are not just accountable to in a life of the hereafter but they need to be held responsible right here on planet earth.

The Umno-BN government must solve the mysteries - both the Altantuya and the Aircraft crisis. To remain indifferent is a crime far worse than the very crime committed against Altantuya or the allowing of a wayward aircraft to go unnoticed by the Malaysian defence forces, to start with for now.

Global leaders cannot treat these matters as domestic issues or even as sovereign privileges. The US president who is gung-ho in coming to Malaysia, too, cannot ignore this mysterious nature of the government here. To do so is an insult to all the Americans.

Let justice prevail for humanity, please.
