An obituary for the soul of Altantuya
Dear Altantuya Shaariibuu, all Malaysians who have a clear conscience; all Malaysians who believe in the Almighty Creator; all ordinary Malaysians who believe in keeping sacrosanct the age-old belief that no human has the singular right to take away the life of a fellow human as life is ordained by the Creator - all of us, in Malaysia, your homeland Mongolia and elsewhere in the world where justice is upheld, stand by the wayside and mourn for you.
Yesterday, the Malaysian court has sentenced to death two individuals who were deemed to have shot you and blasted every inch of your physical body with explosives. One was in court, while the other has gone MIA (missing in action).
We lament and grieve with your surviving and dear family members - your father, mother and the two children of yours - that till this day, despite all these long years and lengthy court dramas, no one seems to have the legitimate answers that will bring ultimate peace to your soul.
We do not know who these two individuals are who actually murdered you, and how they look. We do not know why they did it. We do not know how they had access to the controlled plastic bombs.
We do not know how you entered the country and ended up in nothingness in a forest in Malaysia as there were no immigration records.
We do not know why you had to pay such a high price - with your precious life - for seeking some payments not settled to you. We do not understand all those phone calls from some quarters and why it is no more significant to help answer the many unanswered questions.
We do not know how is it that one person, who seemed to be involved with you, is scot-free and enjoying his freedom in a faraway land that is an icon of law, order and democracy.
A mystery for generations to come
It is in this state of helplessness that we ordinary citizens mourn for your soul. Our nation’s history pages are blotted with your blood spilled in our yard and it will always remain there as a mystery for generations to come.
We mourn, too, because no one seems to be able to close this case beyond reasonable doubt. The netizens are all shocked, going by their angry comments and disbelief of how your gruesome murder case has been wound up today.
Some Malaysians may rebut, “Why make a mountain of one woman’s death; think about the many Malaysian lives we have lost on the line of duty like in Lahad Datu.”
Others may reprimand, “Don’t question Malaysian judiciary and the competence of our judges.”
And perhaps some in power will holler threats like, “Do not politicise this case.”
But the fact remains: You were shot and blasted with powerful plastic explosives merely for coming to Malaysia to ask for your share of the commissions accrued through your involvement in arms negotiations - as what we are led to believe.
The court conclusion that now sends two highly-trained and skilled policemen to the death row still does not answer the most crucial question in the dispensation of human justice, namely, the motive for the killing.
Helpless and hopeless, we - the many right-minded Malaysians - with a conscience and ethical anchoring before our respective Creator whom we may pledge to believe in with all our mind, heart and soul, light a candle in our silent, painful hearts for you.
In the meantime, we will also cradle a flicker of hope drawing from the history pages of human endeavour. If the assassin of John F Kennedy could be brought to justice; if Bill Clinton can be sacked from high office - if all these high-powered incidences in history were dealt with human justice ultimately, one day in the future, we pray, so be it in your case too.
Till then, we Malaysians who never miss to pray and prostrate before our Creator's presence and in our mosques, temples and churches, continue to cry for you.
